Insulin Resistance
When cells in your muscles, fat, and liver can’t use insulin well, you have insulin resistance. Your cells can’t absorb enough sugar from your blood. As a result, sugar builds up in your blood, leading to high blood sugar (diabetes).
Insulin resistance doesn’t cause symptoms. But it raises your risk for diabetes and heart disease.
People who have insulin resistance may have high insulin levels. This is because their bodies produce more insulin to make up for how poorly they use it.
Being overweight and inactive are risk factors of this condition.
Too much body fat limits your ability to use insulin. Most overweight people can improve insulin resistance by losing just 5% to 10% of their weight. Being active also helps the body use insulin.
Some type 2 diabetes medicines target insulin resistance specifically.
